Recently, I have read quite a few blogs on tort reform in medicine. As a physician, I am convinced that tort reform in necessary to keep healthcare costs from spiraling out of control. There is no denying that many physicians in US practice defensive medicine to avoid being sued. Can I blame those physicians – No. How many times I ordered a test “just to make sure” when, in reality, I knew that it would be negative. Tort reform is not “cure all” by all means. We still have to deal with public perception that there is a test and cure for everything, but it’s a start.
