Pneumothorax
This is a very nice educational video describing the mechanism of pneumothorax formation. We see a lot of patients with pneumothorax after a traumatic injury to the chest. Spontaneous pneumothorax happens much less often. The patients on a ventilator who require high ventilatory pressures might develop pneumothorax as a complication of barotrauma.
Traumatic pneumothorax with subcutaneous (SQ) emphysema
This is an example of a traumatic pneumothorax with subcutaneous (SQ) emphysema. Previously, we posted an image of the pneumothorax after CPR with SQ emphysema.
On the image above, please note an incomplete resolution of the pneumothorax after chest tube placement by a trauma surgeon.
Bullous emphysema and pneumothorax
68 year old patient with a previous history of heavy smoking presented with worsening shortness of breath. CT chest revealed bullous emphysema and pneumothorax.
Right pneumothorax after CPR
93 year old male suffered a cardiac arrest. CPR and intubation were performed. The patient survived ans was transferred to ICU. He was noted to develop SQ emphysema. Repeat CXR revealed right-sided pneumothorax.
Traumatic pneumothorax
37 year old male presented as a trauma patient after motor vehicle accident. CT chest revealed left pneumothorax. Chest tube was inserted.
