hydrocephalus
Intracerebral Hemorrhage Causing Hydrocephalus
Middle aged male with a history of hypertension presented to the hospital after he was found at home unresponsive. He was intubated for decreased level of consciousness.
CT head revealed large intracerebral hemorrhage with extension into the ventricular system. The patient also developed hydrocephalus (see enlarged lateral ventricles on the above image).
This is a typical example of the hydrocephalus due to the obstruction of CSF flow (most common). The neurosurgeon was consulted and the external ventricular drain was placed to alleviate increased intracerebral pressure.
Ventricular Drain
The patient presented with a progressive decline in neurological status. CT scan of his head showed enlarged ventricles consistent with hydrocephalus. The external ventricular drain was placed by a neurosurgeon. (See image above)
